Peter Belyi The Memoris of a Spade

I was born on 29th December 1926 in Leningrad. I barely remember my early years. It was a hard time. Industrialization. We grew up quickly – every year seemed like two years had passed. I had to work from an early age. We dug canals, laid the foundations of factories and lived in barracks next to the building sites.
At that time the show trials against the wreckers and saboteurs began. When I was thirteen they got me up at night, along with all the others, as if it were an emergency, loaded us onto a train and we travelled for several weeks. When we left the carriages there was snow all around us even though it was only the end of September.
We immediately began to build a barracks and to dig graves.
